Rosacea Protective Micro Exfoliating Cream

Please note: This page is for reference only; this product is not available online.

New to Specialist Rosacea Treatments in 2008, Rosacea Micro Exfoliating Cream provides the benefits of medical microdermabrasion in a product for regular use at home by patients.

Rosacea Micro Exfoliating Cream contains perfectly spherical alumina microdermabrasion particles to:

  • remove dry or flaky skin;

  • renew skin texture;

  • lessen fine lines;

  • speed resolution of pimples/papules/pustules;

  • reduce visibly open pores;

  • enhance absorption and beneficial activity of rosacea medications;

  • improve the cosmetic wear of rosacea moisturizers, sunscreens or make-up applied after its use.

Unlike conventional facial exfoliants, Rosacea Micro Exfoliating Cream does not:

  • lacerate skin or
  • damage capillaries.

Unlike chemical exfoliants and procedures such as glycolic acid peels, Rosacea Micro Exfoliating Cream:

  • does not acidify skin;
  • does not damage or remove viable skin cells;
  • may be customized according to individual needs (see instructions for use below).

About Rosacea Protective Micro Exfoliating Cream Alumina Particles

Alumina is a white solid (aluminum oxide) that occurs in bauxite and is found in crystalline form as the main constituent of corundum, sapphire, and other minerals.

Alumina used in Rosacea Micro Exfoliating Cream is ultra-fine and perfectly spherical to allow for safe regular exfoliation of rosacea patients' skins.

Rosacea Protective Micro Exfoliating Cream Instructions for Use

Evening use is preferred over morning use.

After use of one of the Rosacea Cleansers, apply a small amount to areas requiring exfoliation and massage gently using small circular motions for up to 2 minutes.

For extra-gentle exfoliation of dead skin cells, use on slightly damp skin.

For stronger exfoliation of dead skin cells, use on dry skin.

Concentrate on areas prone to dryness, irregular skin texture and pimples/papules/pustules.

Rinse thoroughly and complete treatment by misting skin lightly with a Rosacea De-Sensitizing Mist and by applying a combination of 2-5 drops Rosacea Hydrating Serum mixed with Rosacea Treatment Fluid, Rosacea Treatment Cream or Rosacea Cooling Lotion.

Maximum use is once every three days.

Store at similar temperatures away from direct light and use within four months of opening.

Standard Treatment/Revised Treatment

If the efficacy of your pre-existing rosacea treatment is failing, treatment can always be revised.

Standard treatments for rosacea are oral and topical antibiotics and are covered by Medicare and insurance.

Alternative standard treatments, usually used when the above have failed or cannot be tolerated, are erythromycin, cotrimoxazole and isotretinoin.

Very rarely, some practitioners prescribe the lowest potency cortisone to help treat rosacea.

Revised and more advanced treatments are appropriate for treatment-resistant cases, where results have been sub-optimal or where the most complete control possible is desired.

In these instances we provide laser and customised topical (in-office) procedures including chemicals such as glycolic acid.

Lifestyle advice can also provide improvement in your skin's condition.

Lastly, an optimal skin care routine can greatly improve your rosacea and consolidate an enhanced outcome from all therapies combined.

When rosacea symptoms recur, treatment revision can correct your skin's course.

Glycolic Acid in Rosacea Treatment

Glycolic Acid in Rosacea Treatment

Is glycolic acid useful in the treatment of rosacea?

This is a question frequently asked by rosacea patients, who have been told "yes, definitely" and "no, never" among a myriad of positions in-between.

Additionally, rosacea patients trying glycolic acid as a treatment report widely different results in the short and long term.

Some experience intense burning and redness, others experience a calming and clearing of their skin.

Sometimes it appears to work for a period of time before becoming counter-productive, other times benefits appear to accumulate or wax and wane.

Theoretically, glycolic acid demonstrates anti-inflammatory and keratolytic (skin clearing) effects.

Glycolic acid can also help smooth and refine skin texture and colour.

Medical specialists have different approaches to the use of glycolic acid in rosacea reflecting their professional opinions and clinical experiences.

Our position is that you should not use glycolic acid unless you use a formula known to be suitable for rosacea patients.

This is because skin deterioration resulting from the use of products containing glycolic acid is often due to the interaction between the glycolic acid and other ingredients in the product and your skin and not the glycolic acid per se.

As there are no glycolic acid products currently marketed for rosacea treatment (and if there were, unfortunately that would still not be a guarantee of suitability), it is important to use a product known to be effective through solid clinical experience.

Ideally, the product choice and usage is tailored to your skin's thickness, dryness, level of sensitivity and takes into account any other topical medications you are using (glycolic acid can increase/decrease or otherwise alter the efficacy and side effects of other medications).

These factors mean there isn't a single glycolic acid brand or product which will be universally suitable.

The understanding of how glycolic acid works has changed over time. Currently we formulate glycolic acid products for clinical use in concentrations from 5 to 70% at pH values of 1 to 4.5 and for home use at concentrations of 5 to 40% at pH values of 3 to 5. These are almost always intended as an adjunct to other therapies.

Glycolic acid is not a first-line or FDA/TGA approved treatment for rosacea, however is biologically available when applied to skin so it is important that you take care in its use.

Treatment in clinic provided by specialist. The cost of the treatment ranges from $560 to $950 over 3 to 8 weeks depending on the case. Maintenance by way of repeat treatments is generally $150 every 4 to 6 weeks or less often as required. Repeat treatment is recommended if new papules or pustules are forming and appear to be resistant to the usual daily care.
