Coping With Rosacea Over The Holidays
For most patients, end-of-year holidays present the greatest threat to the ongoing successful management of their rosacea.
Changes in climate, whether at home or abroad, and an increasingly tight schedule of events can mete out havoc for rosacea-prone skin.
Symptoms such as persistent redness, papules and pustules, once effectively managed by treatment into remission, can reappear with a vengeance, rapidly undoing much hard work and care.
At this time of year, we'd like to reiterate some pertinent recommendations for managing rosacea over the holidays.
- Avoid over-extending yourself. Stress is a substantial rosacea trigger. Try to maintain the routine and lifestyle that keeps your skin in order as much as possible. Adequate exercise can help prevent the effects of stress from overwhelming your skin. Take some time to elaborate upon your rosacea skin care routine as a means to some fruitful relaxation.
- Carry-on as usual with medication. If you take prescription rosacea medications, now is not the time to be experimenting with dosage, or stopping them entirely for a "medication holiday." If you travel away from home, make sure you have enough medication to cover your vacation. Indeed, some patients only require medication during the holidays.
- Keep the temperature down. Higher temperatures and temperature fluctuations can trigger flushing and the development of harder-to-control symptoms. Warmer places such as the kitchen can be kept at around average room temperature with the aid of an electric fan. You can also use the Clinic's De-Sensitizing Mists to keep your skin's temperature down. A brief misting a few times an hour is usually enough and their active ingredients further help to suppress inflammation and set any rosacea make up or sunscreens you may be wearing.
- Take heed of culinary triggers. For some patients, hot drinks, alcohol (particularly spirits and red wine) and spicy foods are major triggers of their rosacea symptoms. Although it's tempting to make exceptions during the holiday season, if certain foods and drinks provoke a lasting outbreak of symptoms in your skin, it may be worth restraining your enthusiasm for them. With professional assistance, stronger medications or dosage changes may be used, even preemptively, if desired, to manage these occurrences.
- Perfect skin care. Ideal rosacea skin care is paramount at this time, helping to protect against and manage the impact of hurrying between different locations. Variations in temperature, humidity and windiness can quickly take their toll against vulnerable skin.
