Sunscreens and Coneflower (Echinacea)
Sunscreens are a vital and irreplaceable component of the modern dermatologic armamentarium against all stages of rosacea. More complete photoprotection (mechanisms which limit damage due to UV exposure) reduces the severity and improves the prognosis of rosacea. Although sunscreen formulations have improved there are no sunscreen agents (alone or in combination) which provide complete photoprotection. Topical application of antioxidants has emerged as an effective adjunctive strategy. Rosacea De-Sensitizing Barrier Fluid SPF 50 contains Coneflower (Echinacea) extracts which assist in the prevention of UV damage unmitigated by sunscreens. Coneflower also confers anti-inflammatory effects which help prevent and reduce redness. In Germany these extracts are approved medicinal agents for inflammatory skin disorders.
