Rosacea Sunscreen SPF Updated (April 2008)
The Hypoallergenic Daily Wear Rosacea Sunscreen has been reformulated to provide an SPF of 20, up from an original SPF of 15.
The zinc content of this product is slightly higher than before, otherwise its formulation characteristics remain identical to the original SPF 15 Rosacea Sunscreen.
In years prior, an SPF 15 was thought optimal for daily use, however concerns regarding the degradation of the ozone layer combined with histological tests invariably showing severe damage to the dermal matrix of rosacea patients' skins (characteristic of photoaging) mean a slightly higher SPF for daily use is warranted.
Advances in ingredient and formulation technology also mean higher concentrations of zinc oxide need not be cosmetically unacceptable, particularly where dry skin in rosacea is removed to improve the uniformity of the epidermis.
It is important to remember that according to all current local and international regulatory standards, SPF ratings actually only pertain to protection offered against UVB rays, which while harmful are less damaging in the long term to rosacea patients than UVA rays.
UVB rays do not directly deteriorate capillaries, and do not penetrate to dermal depths to modify skin's DNA, a process which if allowed to repeat results in progressively less well-functioning skin and an increase in rosacea symptoms.

Increases in the zinc oxide content of a sunscreen, while currently unable to be accurately expressed in terms of SPF, nevertheless significantly increase a sunscreen's ability to protect against UVA rays.
Zinc oxide provides protection against UV rays between 290-700 nm, the broadest range of protection available from any sunscreening/sunblocking agent, including newer sunscreen chemicals, but without risk of allergy, irritation or undesirable effects in long-term use.
