MMPs (Matrix Metalloproteinases)
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), also called matrixins, are enzymes which function in the extracellular environment of skin cells and degrade both matrix and non-matrix proteins such as collagen and elastin.
Inhibitors which specifically target disease-related MMPs while sparing MMP functions that are protective have benefits in improving the appearance of aging skin (particularly photoaging), diminished facial volume and redness due to inflammation.
MMPs also play an important pathogenetic role in excessive breakdown of connective tissue components such as in arthritis, chronic ulcers, periodontitis, as well as in tumor cell invasion and metastasis.
